Outside yoga classes to feel calm, strong and free

It’s hard to slow down when you’re juggling life. Being busy, or stressed, keeps us from feeling connected and calm, and from the natural flow of energy we need to feel happy and functioning. This is when our mood and health can suffer. Earthed Yoga was created to help busy people, like you and me, get an escape from modern life, reconnect, and feel better. Earthed Yoga believes yoga is for everyone, no matter what physical challenges you have and even if you’ve never done yoga before. If you can find the time to get to a class, you’re off to a good start!

From then, you’ll be led by Rachel Shaw, fully qualified and accredited Dru Yoga teacher, through a series of uplifting Dru Yoga sequences and postures in which all movements are completely modifiable. Our bodies are as individual as we are, but there are no limitations to the benefits you’ll receive as postures are safely adapted to accommodate any present physical quirks.

“Dru Yoga teachers are modification experts. If you need to do a posture in a chair, or keep a part of your body protected, we’ll show you how, and you’ll still gain every benefit.” Rachel Shaw, Earthed Yoga creator and Dru Yoga teacher. Mind and body aim to be connected in yoga, and with Dru Yoga particularly, there is a focus on breath and flow. The idea is that concentrating on our breathing, and our natural rhythms aligns us with nature’s dynamics. But it’s yoga for humans, so it’s ok to fall off your mat, laugh and lose your balance, or just sit on the ground and breathe.

How Rachel came to yoga

“I discovered Dru Yoga, and outside yoga particularly, when I was suffering from trying to manage a high-functioning lifestyle. I badly needed to reconnect.
My energy and mood were often low. I started practising yoga and it was a real lightbulb moment for me. At last, here was a place of peace and stillness.

Just to feel my feet on the earth, listen to the sound of nature, and realize again what’s important. It was life-changing.”

What is Dru Yoga?

Dru Yoga has its origins in traditional Hatha Yoga and was started in the 1970s. It uses many of the classic yoga poses you’ll recognise and the breath work so characteristic of yoga. To look at, Dru Yoga resembles a mix of traditional yoga and the flowing elements of Tai Chi.

‘Dru’ can be translated as ‘north star’, which represents our ‘inner still-point’. Imagine what a kind and peaceful Earth it would be if we were all in tune with our inner still point!

What’s different about Dru Yoga?

Dru Yoga uses Energy Block Release (EBR) sequences, activated by music or nature’s sounds. It’s dynamic, with a focus on healing and unity. That’s why you can leave a class feeling so enlivened and different to when you arrived.

Community, acceptance and friendship, as well as peace and being kind to our Earth, are all important within Dru Yoga.
